bpdaniel72dpiIn the last several months a number of pressing pastoral care issues have arisen in our Diocese as well as elsewhere, which require discussion, interaction and action on our part. As a result, we have scheduled a Spring Clergy Day that will take place twice – in two different locations on two different days, with identical content – so that geographical constraints and schedules will be less of a challenge, and so that we can be sure you have an opportunity to attend. We will have experts and professionals in the fields of addiction, aging and the laws regarding child protection, who will share with us information we need to have about these important issues, and we will have a discussion about ways in which we can help each other and help ourselves deal more directly and effectively with their impact.

We are all aware of the recent cases involving Episcopal priests arrested for drunk driving. It is time for those of us in the Diocese of Pennsylvania to address the issues of addiction and recovery, as they exist today, and to do some self-reflection about how best to serve each other and our constituents with resources, support, and accountability for our actions. In addition, we are seeing increasing congregational challenges involving the loneliness of our older population, manipulation and abuse of older people, financial incompetence as well as elder care and caregiver burnout. Finally, we have all been startled by the new laws requiring more stringent background checks and training for employees and volunteers in our churches. We need to learn as much as we can, have our questions answered and move forward with compliance.

I strongly encourage all of you to attend one or the other of the clergy days being set aside to provide you with help in these areas. Please register online at: https://diopa.wufoo.com/forms/spring-clergy-day/. In the event you cannot attend, please call my office and let me or Linda know why you cannot be there. I look forward to seeing you!

Yours in faith,
