The choirs will present Karl Jenkins’ 2008 piece Stabat Mater. In their first performance of this Welsh composer’s work, the choirs will be accompanied by a chamber orchestra.
The sweeping emotions of the music portray the depth of the grief felt by the mother of Jesus. One listener describes the experience this way: “Using the languages of the period — Aramaic and early Arabic — Jenkins shows emotions through a 13th-century poem set to soaring music. The Middle Eastern emphasis with native percussion instruments interprets the story in heart-rending tones, emerging with a chorus of hope at the conclusion."
Before the performance, Dr. Bruce Glenny, the St. Peter’s Choirmaster, will discuss the elements of Stabat Mater in special preview remarks at 3:30 p.m. Following the performance, there will be Middle Eastern refreshments. Come enjoy an enriching musical experience and fellowship.
