Dr. Rollo Dilworth, leading choral director and composer, will conduct a Choral Workshop on Saturday, January 27, 2018 at the Philadelphia Episcopal Cathedral. The workshop will begin at 1:00 p.m., followed by Choral Evensong at 4:00 p.m. The workshop will be open to all choristers in the Diocese between grades 4 and 12, including tenors and basses, who will be supplemented by choir directors and adult singers from their congregations.
Dr. Dilworth will teach settings of the George Dyson Magnificat and Nunc Dimittis (for trebles, sopranos and altos) and his anthem “Shine on Me” (SATB if we have enough TB youth for the second half of the rehearsal, or SA if not). Cathedral director of music Dr. Thomas Lloyd will teach an Anglican chant version of the Psalm 34:1-8 and Elaine Sonnenberg of St. David’s Episcopal Church, Wayne will be our organist.
Dr. Dilworth, a member of the music faculty of Temple University, and a member of the African Episcopal Church of St. Thomas, Overbrook, is one of the most sought-after choral clinicians around the world.
During the rehearsal break, long-time St. Thomas member and historian Arthur Sudler will tell the story of the Rev. Absalom Jones, the first African-American priest in the Episcopal Church, and the founder of St. Thomas in 1792.
Choir directors will be expected to purchase and prepare the music in advance with their choristers. The pointed psalm will be sent out to directors by email. There are no fees for participants or churches for this event. All costs are being covered by the Cathedral.
