Anti-Muslim ads will be running on SEPTA
Dear Religious Leaders Council Members,
You may have heard the news that SEPTA has decided not to appeal the recent court ruling and so AFDI’s anti-Muslim ads will be running on SEPTA buses starting next week. Attached you’ll find SEPTA’s Press Release.
Rabbi David Ackerman, Religious Leaders Council Member and President of the Rabbinical Assembly (Philadelphia Region), shared the Council’s statement (also attached) at SEPTA’s press conference yesterday. A few of his comments were highlighted in today’s Philadelphia Inquirer.
The Interfaith Center has been coordinating a broad coalition of community partners around this issue for the past many months and invites you to act now in the following ways:
1. Please disseminate the attached Memo for Civic & Religious Leaders within your community. The Memo describes the situation in more detail, shares who might be impacted and offers several strategies / resources for responding.
2. Direct your community members to daretounderstand.org to get involved and support our region-wide Dare to Understand education, advertising, and social media campaign.
3. Create prayers and special readings for this very sacred season that includes Holy Week, Easter and Passover – prayers and readings that somehow diminish the power of these forces that are trying to divide us – prayers that can be shared with houses of worship throughout the city. Please send these materials to me and I’ll disseminate them.
A press conference for next Tuesday, March 31st, is being planned as an opportunity for civic and religious leaders to stand together in responding to these ads. I’ll be sending more information about that event as soon as it is available.
My apologies that all of this is happening at such a full and holy time in the lives of so many of our communities. Please know how deeply grateful I am for your commitment to interfaith relations every day of the year, and how proud I am of the ways the Council has been and will continue to use this moment as a teachable one.
Please be in touch with any questions, comments or concerns.
