Ladies and gentlemen:
I have just read the statement from the Standing Committee that continues to repeat the Committee’s charges that Bishop Bennison was responsible for “financial mismanagement.”
I attach the letter from the President of the Review Committee to which the Standing Committee referred. The canons of the Church do not require it to be kept confidential. I note Bp. Henderson’s statement that “The Church Attorney concluded that Bishop Bennison committed no offense in these matters … for which he should be disciplined…”
Bishop Bennison did not control the check book. Various committees and others – laity and clergy alike – were involved, along with the Bishop and Church House staff, in overseeing and making decisions regarding diocesan finances, in asking questions or, sometimes, not asking the right questions. There is a shared responsibility, and all of those involved should acknowledge that. I include myself in this group.
