Nominating Committee Prepares for the Diocesan Convention

The Nominating Committee first met on April 14, to begin the work of identifying candidates for the Diocesan Convention in November.

Standing Orders of Convention state that in no less than four months before each Convention, the Bishop shall appoint a committee of at least 10 communicants of the Diocese, at least five of whom shall be members of the Clergy and at least five lay persons to make nominations for all diocesan offices to be filled at such Convention.

During this transitional period for the Diocese, the Standing Committee, the ecclesiastical authority for the Diocese, has selected six clergy and six lay persons to serve on this year’s nominating committee.

The committee at its first meeting began to develop a questionnaire to assess staffing needs of all diocesan committees and commissions. The questionnaire informed the Diocese that the committee’s goal “is two-fold – to create an open, accessible nominating process and to help potential nominees understand the roles and responsibilities required for service on a particular committee or commission.” Every committee and commission chair received a copy of the questionnaire with a request to relay questions or concerns to the committee.

The committee met again on April 29 and decided to send a second request to committee and commission chairs informing them that the positions would be published.

Additionally, the letter included the nominating committee’s plans to solicit names of potential candidates from deans, parish rectors and other voting delegates who have an interest in our Diocese’s leadership needs.

“The Nominating Committee looks forward to a smooth and orderly process of vetting the best candidates to serve the Diocese,” says the Rev. Ledlie Laughlin of St. Peter’s, Philadelphia, co-chair of the committee. The other co-chair, Jan Ross, the only veteran from last year’s Nominating Committee, nodded her agreement and added, “the committee’s early start and the full participation of this year’s group makes me confident that we will meet the challenge of assembling a slate of good and eager candidates.”

The Standing Orders of Convention state that the Nominating Committee shall present its nominations to the Committee on Elections not less than 60 days prior to the convention. The biographies of all nominees will be placed on the website.

The nominating committee members have agreed to work throughout the summer and to publish a slate of nominees by September 15.
