Letter from the Standing Committee

Advent 2011

November 28, 2011

Dear Sisters and Brothers in Christ,

Your newly configured Standing Committee (“SC”) is eagerly embarking upon a new season. A full report of actions taken during the past year is available on the diocesan website. The minutes of our meetings are posted each month. If you have hopes or concerns you would like the SC to address please do not hesitate to be in touch with me or any other Committee member.

I write to share highlights of our November meeting:

Having said thank you and farewell to Ms. D-L Wormley and the Rev. Joy Segal for their faithful service, we welcomed those newly elected: Ms. Jane Cosby and the Rev. Kathy Andonian.

Officers were elected to serve a one year term: the Rev. Ledlie Laughlin, President; Mr. Mac McCausland, Vice President; and Ms. Jo Ann Jones, Secretary. We passed a resolution of appreciation for the years of service provided by Ms. Arlene McGurk as Secretary.

We received the resignation from the SC of the Rev. Isaac Miller, effective immediately. Ike explains: “It dawned upon me that 14 years of service was enough when, at Diocesan Convention in the midst of discussing the resolution on limiting the terms for Standing Committee members, Bill Wood made reference to his 16 years on the committee. It has been an honor to serve the Diocese with a group that has consistently been thoughtful, willing to face challenges and concerned for the Oneness and integrity to which we are called in Christ. My thanks to all who supported my election to the Standing Committee on three occasions.”

The SC passed a resolution of appreciation for the years of service provided by the Rev. Isaac Miller.

It is the responsibility of the SC to fill any vacancy and elect an individual “to serve only until the next Stated Convention.” We will call upon the co-chairs of the Diocesan Nominating Committee to assist, and I ask for your prayers and recommendations.

With the $3 million dollar loan for Wapiti due in December, SC approved paying off half the amount and negotiating a new loan for the balance. Pending concurrent approval of the Diocesan Council and the Finance & Property Committee, per R-8-2011 approved by Convention, action will be taken. Once finalized, additional information will be made public.

Each member of SC will be assigned to serve as liaison to one or more diocesan committees, including two “working groups” to be formed to 1) proceed with the sale of Wapiti and 2) explore options for the future vitality of the Retired Clergy Medical Insurance.

Approved a Position Description for the Treasurer of the Diocese, as shared in a recent diocesan email. Gave consent to the ordination to the presbyterate of the Rev. Lindsay Hills and the Rev. Matthew Holcombe.

Please pray for the Standing Committee as we seek to carry out the work you have elected us to do and please be assured that we are praying for you and for this Diocese, that together we may be a beacon of Christ’s love in the world.

May you have a blessed Advent. Peace!

Ledlie
