The State of the Diocese

The State of the Diocese:
The Diocese of Pennsylvania in 2012
The Rt. Rev. Charles E. Bennison, Jr.
The Feast of the Epiphany
January 6, 2012

If you see something, say something.
- Department of Homeland Security

Our little systems have their day;
They have their day and cease to be;
They are but broken light of thee,
And thou, O Lord, art more than they.
- Alfred Lord Tennyson

“If you see something,” blares announcement throughout high-risk areas of our airports and train stations, “say something.” What I see is that the average age of parishes in our diocese, like the Episcopal Church, portends a death tsunami in 10 to 20 years unless we make ministry to, with, and by our children and youth our “Number One” program and budget priority.

Letter from the Standing Committee

Christmas 2011

Dear Sisters and Brothers in Christ,

Friends, it is not our intention to write each month, but we are eager to share news from our December meeting:

With gratitude and anticipation, we have elected the Rev. Sherry Crompton Deets for a one year term on the Standing Committee to fill the vacancy created by the resignation last month of the Rev. Isaac Miller. The Standing Committee received the names of ten candidates, and invited each to submit a brief statement of interest. We elected Sherry from among these highly qualified applicants. If she chooses, Sherry may stand for election for a full term at our next Convention.

Standing Committee Committed to Nurturing Health of the Diocese

Taking to heart our belief that the church is the body of Christ, in the coming year the Standing Committee will strive to nurture healthy relationships among the governing bodies and the many congregations, clergy, and people of our Diocese. Among ways we will measure “health,” we envision the following: be clear in our mutual understanding of respective roles and responsibilities with appropriate delegation and mutual support; celebrate different gifts and strengths of all in the Diocese; help one another feel safe; raise up new leaders; maintain regular communication; commit to prayer and worship together; build enough trust to begin hosting a vision for our future. Clearly, this is not the work of the Standing Committee alone. It is the ministry of all of us together as the body of Christ. Steps are already being taken among the governing bodies to gather leaders so that we may clarify our interdependencies and build support.

A Statement Regarding the Program Budget and the Ministries of the Diocese of Pennsylvania

October, 2010

Dear Sisters and Brothers in Christ: As a Diocese we are facing a financial crisis that threatens to undercut the vital ministries which define our corporate mission and identity. These are the ministries of the Program Budget and they are funded by your voluntary pledges to the Diocese. Although we have progressively reduced our expectations for this income, the actual amount pledged has continued to drop. We are now at the point where there is nothing left to cut that is not absolutely essential to our most vital ministries. Yet despite this reality we are again facing the possibility of a significant shortfall of pledges.

Statement to the Diocese of Pennsylvania

Sunday, August 8, 2010

The following is the Standing Committee statement that was read at Sunday’s gathering at the Cathedral.

The Right Reverend Charles E. Bennison, Jr., has served as the Bishop Diocesan of Pennsylvania since May 16, 1998. On October 28, 2007, the National Church Title IV Review Committee issued a Presentment against him charging him with two counts of Conduct Unbecoming a Member of the Clergy under Title IV.1.1(g), and on November 3, 2007, the Presiding Bishop of the Episcopal Church inhibited him from all episcopal and clerical acts, thereby temporarily stripping him of Ecclesiastical Authority over the Diocese of Pennsylvania. Pursuant to the Canons of The Episcopal Church, the Standing Committee became the Ecclesiastical Authority in Bishop Bennison’s absence.

Dear People of the Diocese of Pennsylvania, At its most recent meeting the Standing Committee voted to end immediately the year long moratorium on accepting new aspirants into the ordination process. We know that a number of diocesan clergy are in conversation with parishioners about vocations to ordained ministry. Jesus said to him the third time, “Simon, son of John, do you love me?” Peter felt hurt because he said to him the third time, “Do you love me?” And he said to him, “Lord, you know everything; you know that I love you.” Jesus said to him, “Feed my sheep.” John 21:17

When Lloyd Casson, our wonderful new Interim Dean at this Cathedral, called last week to suggest we have this service on William White Day, inviting any and all to come, I thought, “What a timely idea!” If we can just bring Bishop White back from the dead and put him in charge again, all will be well.
