Rev. Canon Charles L.L. Poindexter to be installed as Rector Emeritus

St. Luke’s Church, Germantown

Rev. Canon Charles L. L. Poindexter will be installed as Rector Emeritus, St. Luke’s Episcopal Church, Germantown, 9:00 am Solemn High Mass, September 26, 2010. Rev. Canon H. Gregory Smith is current Rector, St. Luke’s. St. Luke’s celebrates it 200th anniversary 2011.

In 1968, the late Rev. Robert Hill, Rector of an all white Church and Rev. Charles Poindexter, Rector of St. Barnabas Church an all black church merged and became one church. A historic event. Rev. Poindexter has said, “christians decide to unite and race becomes secondary.”

After the merger, 1969, Reverend Poindexter realized his dream and founded St. Barnabas School, so name after his former church. He became Head Master and wanted the young to become contributing citizens in society.

At St. Luke’s 180th anniversary in 1991, Fr. Poindexter invited guests to speak at solemn liturgies included The Right Reverend Barbara Harris, first female bishop in the Anglican Communion, Dr. Constance Clayton, former Superintendent of Philadelphia Public Schools, Carl Singley, Esq. Temple University, Dr. Maya Angelou and the Right Reverend Franklin Turner.
