Diocesan Voices

In his recent Eastertide column, Bishop Allen Bishop reminded us that “We are now called to live as the wounded but risen Body of Christ, bearers of forgiveness, hope, and joy”. Although it might be easy to fall into the trap of focusing on how “our spirits here are troubled,” I wanted to share some of the other messages that we have received over recent weeks. I thank those who penned these messages and allowed me to share them with you.

"...And share with us in his eternal priesthood."

by John Wm. Houghton

A few weeks ago, I showed one of my classes Jesus Christ Superstar. Like most versions of the show, this one was full of anachronisms, particularly in the costumes. The apostles wore, mostly, jeans and t-shirts, while the Romans were dressed in quasi-Nazi outfits. The Jewish priests were in various kinds of black robes, and Caiaphas had a big square necklace with ornaments dangling off the bottom of it.

Staff Changes at the Cathedral

At the Sunday Liturgy on March 30 Dean Richard Giles announced his retirement after nine years as dean. He and his wife Sue will return to live in the UK, making their home in Tynemouth in the North East of England. A firm date has yet to fixed (the dean has a house to sell and needs a buyer!), but it will be sometime during the summer of this year.

At the same time Dean Richard announced that Canon Lloyd Casson has agreed to join the cathedral staff, initially as priest associate as from June 15 and, upon Dean Richard’s retirement, as Interim Dean for a period of 12 months.

The Wounded but Risen Body of Christ

The disciples had seen Jesus put to a painful death and buried. So when their astonished eyes beheld him before them, they were ecstatic with joy. But Thomas was missing, and when they told him, he couldn’t believe it. He wanted to see the mark of the nails in his hands and the wound of the spear in his side.

Moratorium on the Ordination Process

A Letter from The Standing Committee And the Commission on Ministry

The canons of The Episcopal Church require bishops to oversee the entire ordination process. Our diocesan bishop, The Rt. Rev. Charles E. Bennison, Jr., has been inhibited by the Presiding Bishop of The Episcopal Church and cannot function as a bishop pending outcome of his trial. Although the Standing Committee serves as the Ecclesiastical Authority during this time, it cannot assume a bishop’s role in the ordination process.
